Bassinet vs. Mini Crib
We're here to help figure out what the best option is for YOU, and discuss the pros and cons of each one.
Bassinet 101So, let’s start with bassinets! Depending on what stroller you’ve chosen, it may come with a bassinet that is sleep-rated. For Example, the UPPAbaby VISTA V2 stroller comes with a sleep-rated bassinet that can be used on the stroller and at home. There is an optional bassinet stand available for purchase by UPPAbaby and for longevity, it can be converted into a laundry hamper later on with the additional purchase of an insert. Another option is the Jolly Jumper Rocking Bassinet stand. It has a rocking motion and is a little bit easier to move around the house.
Folding- An important feature for some parents, especially if you think that you are going to be traveling with your little one and don’t have a playpen that is sleep rated. The Fold Away Bassinet by Ingenuity is an amazing option if you need something for smaller spaces or something that folds up easily.
Motion- Some parents look for a bassinet that has movement to help ease their little one into slumber. If you prefer a more traditional bassinet, the Rockwell Bassinet by Monte offers a low-profile, rocking style that is minimalistic. If you’re looking for a little more than just a rocking motion, the 4moms mamaROO Sleep Bassinet has 5 different motions and 5 speeds so you can find the one that works best for you and your little one!
Height - Many parents are looking for something that can easily sit above their bed, whether that be super high or super low. The line of bassinets that HALO sells offer a variety of height settings that can accommodate even the tallest of beds. Mini cribIf reading the above about bassinets feels like it isn’t for you, then a mini crib may be a better option. Mini cribs are an amazing option if you are working with a small nursery space. While mini cribs are smaller than your standard crib, they can still be used for a longer amount of time than a bassinet can, with the maximum weight capacity going up to 40 pounds and the option to lower the mattress, mini cribs are suitable for newborn to 18 months+. Here are different features that you may be looking for in a mini crib.
Folding- similarly discussed with the bassinets, having a mini crib that can fold can be gamechanger for parents with limited space or parents who are hoping to be able to take their mini crib with them if they go up to the cottage or stay with grandparents. You might like the Dylan Folding Mini Crib by Da Vinci.
Convertibility- There are options for ones that convert into single beds as your little one gets older with the addition of conversion rails. We love the Autumn Mini Crib by Da Vinci if this sounds like a good option for your family.
Portability/Wheels - being able to move the crib around easily within your space can have an impact on whether or not it’s the right mini crib for you. The Origami Mini Crib by Babyletto has locking wheels, so you can move it from room to room (ie your bedroom to the nursery) without hassle.
Extra Storage - in smaller nursery spaces, having extra storage space can be a HUGE bonus, especially if you can only fit a smaller sized dresser into the room. The Colby Mini Crib by Carter’s has a storage drawer underneath the crib to allow for that additional storage space for clothes, bedding or diapers!
One of the major benefits of buying a mini crib includes saving space inside your nursery, especially if you are having multiples. In the case of twins (or triplets!), parents are often concerned about being able to have a space large enough for two cribs; mini cribs will allow parents to comfortably fit two cribs into the nursery.
Ultimately, you as a parent are going to pick whichever you feel is the best option for your child. We hope this information was informative and helpful to make a confident choice for your new bundle of joy!
