Best cupboard locks!
Love them! We had recently renovated our kitchen so I wanted something that I wouldn't have to screw into my cabinets. I also love that my kitchen doesn't look baby proofed.
Excellent Choice for Devious Little Devils
My wife and I have a highly energized, extremely creative child with a very high level of problem solving capability, and a strong desire to get into everything. Around when he started walking he began to take an interest in cupboards and other areas we needed to keep him out of. Having tried some of the press-based locks both my wife and I found them acceptable, but the stiffness caused issues for a grandparent with joint issues. So we decided to try a number of magnetic locks.
Having tried several types these were excellent. They remain fully functional 2yrs later, and we have more than 30 cabinets/cupboards secured with them throughout the house. We have noticed a few things:
a) buy a spare key (or several) to start, so you don't lock one in a cupboard by accident (but a strong magnet works as well)
b) we keep several keys in our kitchen in the "work triangle" in defined spots, so we quickly have one at hand, but also quickly notice if one is missing (and perhaps stuck to the side of a pot...)
c) the adhesive mount works fairly well on the latch (large) side, but doesn't work great on the catch (thin) side. I'd use it for positioning and then install the supplied screws. You can also use toothpicks if you need to "shim" or adjust the catch at all.
d) The catch side (small piece) has two little tabs to help you first position the lock when you are mounting things. These plastic parts *intentionally* break off leaving the catch as just a small, thin piece of plastic. I'm not sure what broke for the other reviewer, but if it was these tabs the lock will work just fine if they are left on, but they are "breakaway" pieces that can easily be knocked off over long use, and the installation manual suggests breaking them off once the lock is fully positioned.
Overall these are well built, and of good quality. They key is intentionally sized to be impossible to swallow or get in most kids mouths, (although I've been known to carry it around in mine when my hands are full) and takes a beating with no chance of the magnet being lost. We also like the "disable" mechanism that lets us disable the locks (keep them open) when cooking or baking as a family and using full supervision.
For us, these are now second nature and will stay on for years until both our current, and future children are well beyond the safety concerning years.
Great Idea Poor Execution
These were a great idea. But with 6 months of installing, they are broken. Save yourself some money and use the non magnet type.
