How do you get your children to understand when it's time to get up? SIMPLE "stay in bed until you see the sun!"

This updated version of the Gro Clock uses fun images of the stars and sun to communicate when to go back to sleep and when it's time to get up. Due to popular request, this version of the Gro Clock has a new feature allowing parents to choose whether or not to display the digital clock during the usual ‘stars to sun’ countdown. For older children, they can now start to learn digital time, as well as look for the arrival of the sun!

The Gro Clock helps to encourage children to stay in bed longer, which means more sleep for them and more sleep for you!

Due to US Patents we are unable to sell and ship Gro Clocks to the USA.

  • Glowing screen shows images of stars and sun to communicate 'sleep' and 'wake-up' time
  • Will work in all North American electrical outlets
  • Includes fun bedtime story book
  • Stars go out one-by-one during the night to show the passing of time
  • Key-lock option
  • Option to set two separate wake-up times (weekday/weekend or night-time/day-time nap)
  • Adjustable screen brightness
  • Silent operation with optional audible alarm feature

Great Product

A bit pricy, but if it gets my little guy (who is 19 months!) to sleep in a little more in the morning, it's totally worth it! Easy to operate. Like the ability to set two wake up times (nap wake up and morning wake up)

Good investment

LOVE THIS! We've been using it with our now 3 year old since she was about 18 months. It has saved us many early mornings, as she quickly learned not to call for us unless the sun wasn't up. Even now, she remembers that if she doesn't sleep, she'll be grumpy like Percy Pig. Pricey, but worth it.

our kids LOVE the Gro Clock

it's pricey….but MAN IS IT WORTH IT! i HAD 2 lil ones who would sneak into our room to announce it was daylight every morning. in summer months…this could be at a painful 6am ;) now with the settings, kids know it's still bed time until "mr. sun is up!" we use it as part of our bedtime routine. the kids say goodnight to mr. sun and sleepy star.

Best clock for little kids

We bought this to help my daughter figure out when she was aloud to get out of bed. It is great. We ready the story and she gets it. She even gets upset if we forget to set it at night. Great for naps too... We bought it when she was 2.5 and now she is 5 and we still love it!!

This clock has helped me keep my daughter in her room past 5:30am. Even if she wakes early to go to the bathroom she always says back to bed until the sun comes up. When the sun does come up she always says 'the sun awake, good morning sun.'

Fantastic!

We got this clock for my son around 20 months. It took a little bit of reinforcement but he now knows to stay in his room until the sun comes up! I don't know that he sleeps any longer, but knowing that he will stay in his room until a certain time means we can get ready for the day in peace :) I highly recommend this, despite the hefty price tag.

So far so good

We bought this for our 2 1/2 year old son because he kept waking up and coming out of his room at 6 a.m. I don't know that it makes him sleep longer but he now stays in his room and reads books until 7:15 so I'm happy with it.

Great idea

We love the GroClock! My daughter would get up so early every day and then would be cranky. Getting her to stay in bed was challenging (she's 2), until we got the GroClock. After one or two mornings of explaining she has to wait for the sun, it now works like a charm all the time!! We've been using it for about 5 months. Love it. The only complaint I have, is the lowest setting for brightness is still really bright and lights up her whole room at night.

This clock is a great idea. In my house, it doesn't always work, but the book that comes with the clock is really cute and my 4 year old and 2 year old say 'goodnight' to the sun each night. Do the stay in bed until it rises in the morning? Sometimes. But, it is a good tool to try to enforce it!

Fantastic product. We are 6 months into using it, and our 3 year old still looks to it every morning to make sure the 'sun's awake' before coming in to our room. Even if she is up early, she will sit and play in her room until the sun comes out to play. It really helped to put day vs night into perspective for her. I found it a bit pricey, but worth the money since we'll have this for years to come.

Finally sleeping in past 5:30

I was told it took at least a month to train your child to use this. It only took about a week for us. It is a great feeling not to have to wake up too early in the morning. My daughter loves it too, she gets so excited and comes running into our room saying "the sun is awake the sun is awake!"

We love this just as much as our toddler

Simple function even my 2 yo can operate. She says "the sun is up" when she wakes up with the clock. Separate setting for night time and nap time is an important feature. Even the story book that comes with the clock is a regular read in our bedtime story rotation.

Good product

Good tool to help toddler learn when it is 'morningtime'. I like that it comes with a little book to explain the process to kids that is fun for them to read. Definitely not a 'miracle solution' for keeping kids in their room, but a good product nonetheless. Clock doesn't keep consistent time though, so you will notice that the time the sun comes on the clock will get a bit later and a bit later little by little.

Works for certain children

If you have a child who works well with structure and rules, this will work well ! Our child does wait for the sun but our daughter (who likes to test the rules..) doesn't care what the groclock says ! Loll I guess it depends of the child.

A great choice.

I first balked at the $50 price tag, thinking that was too expensive for just a clock. But, we were having a lot of trouble with our 18 month old waking up too early. We bought this clock hoping that it would help him understand that he could call for us on the monitor only after Mr. Sun woke up (at 7:00 insttead of 5:30!). It took him three days to catch on and now a year later we're still using it and also for his afternoon nap. (I've even seen him wake up, look at the clock, and then roll over and go back to sleep because the sun's not up yet!) If he does wake up early, he's so good at just waiting in bed, chatting or playing by himself, until he sees the sun come up and then calls for us.

I definitely recommend this if you are having difficulty with your child waking up too early. Your kid will probably understand this concept even before the recommended age.

Worth every penny

We bought this clock and began using it from the first day our son transitioned out of his toddler bed to a new room with a new "big kid" bed at just over 2.5 years old. He caught on right away - the first morning he waited until he saw the sun to come out of his room. The next morning he forgot but with a gentle reminder went back into his room no problem. One year later he is still totally respecting "the sun" and sees it basically as the law! Easily some of the best money we've ever spent as parents. We recommend it to everyone. The only thing is that you have to be willing to follow-up if your child isn't obeying the "wait till you see the sun" rule - as with everything parenting related, consistency is very important!

Very effective

At first it seemed like the idea wasn't working for our son, but then after a few days of constantly talking about what to do when the star is up and when the sun comes up, it all of a sudden clicked and he is so excited when he wakes up and he can come and tell us the sun is up so he can get up. It is very expensive for a clock, but with free shipping it helps.

I found this item a bit expensive however it does seem like good quality. It works well; I haven't had any problems. I had no problems setting the wake times by following the directions. Works great & kids love it.

Both my children have this clock (4.5 & 2.5), however it was recently a Christmas gift for our 2.5 year old. She knows that she's to stay in bed until she sees her sun appear. Every night she turns it on and says "good bye sun, hello stars" (as does her big brother). We didn't use the book to explain the clock, but we stayed consistent with the 'rules' and reiterated them for the kids constantly.

Our son had issues with waking at night and not being able to go back to sleep. He had a digital clock, and knew it wasn't time to get up yet, but I think that involved too much consciousness for him, which woke him up more. The GroClock put an end to that. Now he can easily tell if it's time to wake up.

I do think the clock is overpriced though. A good feature would be a small remote so I could turn on the stars from outside of the room on nights that we forget, or turn on the sun earlier without entering the room. It's easy to set and easy to use. It also has a button-lock feature which is handy.

Very effective

We started using this around age 2 to help keep our little guy in bed a bit later in the morning. It comes with a cute story book to help kids understand the difference between the sun and the moon. He seemed to pick it up immediately and it was a very effective tool for extending our sleep. Our son really enjoys putting the sun to bed at night, and waiting for him to wake up in the morning. It's essentially an alarm clock, so I find the price very expensive, but it DOES work. It was easy enough to set up and included instructions. I would suggest putting this out of reach because my son is constantly trying to push all the buttons on it.

Excellent product.

I was VERY hesitant to shell out $50 for this tool (I still think that it could/should be sold for less), but we were so tired of being woken at 5am every day that we bought it for our 22 month old. He is a bit on the young side to use this kind of thing with, but within 4 days he got it. We now do not have to get out of bed before 6am (our goal), which is a big win for daddy and I (although still very early!). Our son (who sleeps in the same room as us, in a crib beside our bed) still wakes before 6am, but he does not wake us up until he sees the sun on the clock, at which point we promptly get up and tell him what a good boy he was for staying in bed until he saw the sun. He just lays quietly in his crib and waits up until then. I think that this is kind of amazing!!! Thank you Gro Clock.

Worth the effort

We bought the Gro clock just after our daughter's 2nd birthday. It took some time and patience to teach her to follow its signal but its now a key part of her bedtime & quiet time routines. Its helpful to have something concrete - something other than "Mommy says its not time to get up." She now knows if Mr Sun isn't up, she shouldn't be either.

Miracle product!

This worked miracles with my son at 22 months. He was constantly coming into our bed in the middle of the night and when we started using this clock I was definitely skeptical. After 2 days of training and only a few tears, he started sleeping on his own through the night until the "stars came out". He loves coming ins our room in the morning and saying time to get up the sun is up! We do like our Gro Clock, but it's too bright for night time. Even with the brightness adjusted to it's lowest setting, we turn the clock away from our son every night after we say goodbye to the sun. Other then the brightness, it's a good product. The sun coming on in the morning is wonderful.

Great concept

This clock is a great concept and it does work reasonably well--we bought it for our then 22 month old just before our second baby was born so that we could curb the earlier and earlier wake up time that was creeping in. We initially set it so that the sun would be up when she woke up so that she would be excited about seeing the sun and not discouraged off the bat that it was still the stars when she woke up--- then adjusted it to 5 minutes after her usual wake up time so that the time wasn't too long and frustrating a wait. Within 2 weeks, she was sleeping until a more reasonable time and having much happier days.
There are some aspects that could be better--- once she gave up her naps at 2.5 years old, we used it for quiet time, and that wasn't necessarily the same time every single day, which meant that we had to go in and re-set the "nap" time to be a half hour from whatever time it was when she went down, it would be SO much easier if there was a button or setting for half hour increments that you could just push and the sun would come up in a half hour. There is also no battery back up, so if the power goes out in the middle of the night, the clock stops working.
All in all, it does do the job we bought it for, but a few extra features would make is much easier to use.

glad i bought it

I was worried about spending so much on a toddler clock but I am glad I did. My son was an amazing sleeper until 2 1/2 then he was waking at night, sleepwalking, having nightmares etc etc. We realized that we needed a nightlight. Also being from up north it was light out when he went to bed - so we needed a way to help him realize it was not time to play. Thought might as well try this clock. I'm sure he is still waking throughout the night but he's not running into things or waking us. So in other words this has helped us parents sleep better. He also seems more rested in the morning. I do worry about the blue light (as another review stated) but it seemed to help us out so that's all that matters right now. A couple of things to remember:
- if it's unplugged you need to reset the clock and etc. My toddler unplugged it for a bit saying 'the star went away" but we just told him not to do it and he doesn't anymore
-you can change the brightness of the nightlight to something more soothing we have ours set at 4.

Not a magic wand

Like many parents, I was hoping for an elusive magical sleep fairy, when really I'm dealing with developmentally-appropriate changes in sleep patterns. In hindsight I should have waited things out rather than investing a significant amount into this clock. My toddler understands the concept of the sun/star/colours, he just doesn't care. It's another pretty toy, not a lifestyle guide. And as a nightlight, it's distractingly bright.

Amazing product

We first bought one clock for our 5-year-old, then another for our 3.5-year-old. It's especially helpful during the winter months (up north) when it's dark from the early evening to the mid-morning and the kids go to sleep and wake-up in the pitch dark (outside). They were waking up in the middle of the night, thinking it was wake-up time and coming running into our room, excited to start the day....only to be disappointed when we told them it was the middle of the night and they would have to go back to bed. This way they only wake up for a few seconds before they realize it's still the middle of the night and (usually) fall right back to sleep. Will also work well up here in the summer when it's broad daylight until past 9:00pm and the sun's back up at by 5:00 so they're going to bed and waking up during full-daylight hours but need more than 7 hours of sleep! Also provides a nice, not-too-bright night-light!

great at first... now we have issues

I LOVED this clock. It worked wonders for my daughter when she was 3 and waking up earlier and earlier..... but now 18 months into owning it, the display is no longer working properly. The black on the display (star outlines, faces, etc.) gradually fade after you plug it in, until the only thing left is a bright light when the 'sun' is up, and a blue light display for night time. For the price we paid, I was expecting it to last long enough for us to use for our son too.

I did find the clock to be a bit pricey & waited to purchase it until there was a no tax event.
I purchased it for my 21 month old son because he has never really slept through the night & thinks its time to 'party' at 4:30 am.
He is now learning to say Good Night to the sun & Hello to the stars. We're beginning to learn that he needs to wait for the sun to come up.

life changing clock

this clock has easily resulted in me getting hours and hours more sleep (and more important, hours and hours for my little one). We started using the clock when she was still in her crib at about 14mths old - - just to start the concept. When she moved to a 'big girl' bed at about 18mths, she automatically knew that 'sleepy stars' was night time and the 'happy sun' was time to get up... now over 2 years old, she never, ever gets out of bed until the sun comes up, we watch her on the video monitor checking the clock, then putting her head back on the pillow until the sun is there.. amazing clock, would recommend to anyone!!

Great Purchase

We love this clock! We started using it when my daughter was about 2 1/2, coupled with a reward, she started staying in her bed until her sun came up. My only wish is that it had a better lock key function (currently you just hold down one button to lock and unlock the buttons). My daughter quickly figured out how to unlock the keys and on a few occasions has gotten her sun to come up before 7:00 a.m.

Awesome!

This clock changed my life! Sounds korny but true! The best $50 i ever spent. My son was a 5:30am boy and was evil cranky at that hour too! I knew he needed more sleep! I did not think that this would work, i mean it just seems so simple, it couldn't be this easy but i thought why not at least try! It worked!!! He just understood the concept....he now stays in bed until 7:30! And he pops out of his room announcing that the sun is up! The most brilliant invention ever! I just bought a second clock for my youngest now who is 2 1/2 and needs a little direction on when to start calling out in the morning! Worth every penny! I Highly recomend this clock!

Cool Product

This clock is a great idea. My son loves it. He is 2 and 2 months so he might be a bit young for it. He still fusses when he wakes up and sees that the sun isn't up and then he just cries for the sun to come up. But I am sticking with it in hopes that he gets used to it. I wish the buttons were on the back so that the child isn't tempted to push them. It is quite expensive.

Disappointed

If your children sleep in a very dark room, this is not a good product. I was excited about the new version having brightness adjustments, but even at it lowest setting (out of ten)... it still made our kids room look like blue daytime. Much too bright.

Also the colours are all wrong. After doing quite a bit of research on light and colour and how it affects our sleep I discovered that blue light (the kind this clock emits all night) is actually the signal light to tell our bodies it's time to wake up. Recent studies have shown exposing humans to light blue light (that which mimics early morning light) disrupts our circadian rhythms and causes the body stress and doesn't allow us to have a proper restorative sleep.

The clock should show a bright white light during the day, a reddish yellow light just before bedtime, a very dim deep reddish glow during the night (with the option to have it turn off during the night) and then in the morning when it's time to get up, a light blue light.

I'm returning mine and will just buy a $5 dollar lamp from Ikea (lots of cute little kids options) + $5 plug timer = much better for my kids and a much cheaper option.

Fits the bill!

We got this for our early-rising 2 year old and it seems to be a hit so far!

PROS: Great part of our bedtime and wake up routine. Lock-out option is great because she will ask to see the sun again after we say good-night. And so far, it seems to have helped with a more reasonable wake-up time.

CONS: Price. Programming it was a bit frustrating. The first few nights, it didn't work and we still don't know why. I wish the lock-out mode worked for all screens, not just the star screen. Battery-powered would be helpful as well. And we although the box says that can be used for more than a 12-hr span, there are no instructions on how to set it that way.

All in all, it has done the job for which we bought it. So we're happy parents!

3 year old loves clock

I was looking for a clock that appealed to my imaginative daughter who loves fanciful things. This clock fit, and she is excited to see the sun each morning -- making sure everyone in the house comes to look at her clock. I like that it can be plugged into an electrical outlet and can be used as an alarm clock in a few years. I did take me awhile to figure out how to program the clock. A bit frustrating, but we're good to go now. The price point is a bit high, but I paid it because it was the best looking clock with all the features I wanted.

Life altering product

Okay, life-altering is a bit extreme but it has made a world of difference for my non-napper and early riser. My son would always resist naps and was not the kind of baby to ever just "play" in his crib until we got him. He is 22 months and while it took him a couple of weeks to catch on, he totally gets it now. He knows exactly what it means to "say night-night to the sun" and he even kisses it now before crawling into bed. Some mornings he has an extra hard time waiting for the sun to come up but most of the time , like clockwork we will hear him say "SUN... UP!" right on cue. For the most part we can say "night night" to our 5am wakeups. It's truly awesome.

not original concept, but fantastic quality

This isn't the only "wake with sun" concept clock on the market but I prefer it for a few reasons: sleek, fun (book with it), nap setting, battery or outlet, alarm option
I first bought one for my daughter for her 2nd birthday. This was when the clock was not available in a Canadian store, so I ordered it from the UK. We love it. It works and the book with it is beautifully written and "hits home" the concept in the child's mind. I just purchased another for a gift. I prefer it over the other brands on the market. It's well made, has great functions and options as opposed to the other basic ones. It has an appealing look to it. I love that the backlight brightness can be adjusted. It would be nice if it were cheaper but I wouldn't want the cheaper price point to downgrade the quality, so I, for one, am content with the price. I have used lesser quality ones (my nieces and nephews own) and this one is worth it.

Working on it...

Our son is 3 and understands the concept of only getting up when he sees the sun. Unfortunately, he doesn't have the patience to wait. :)
We set the "sun" for 6:30, but he usually gets up at 6:15. On the few mornings when he's slept until after 6:30, he's been very proud/excited to come show us that the "sun" is up! It's a very neat concept, just takes time. Even when they outgrow the sun feature, it's still a stylish clock that they can continue to use.

Love this clock!! My 20 month old caught on quickly, and stopped waking up at 5:30/6AM within days of starting to use it. We'll see how she does when she transitions to a real bed that she can climb out of herself. I do agree it is pricey...but for a bit more sleep, it has been worth it.

Works Great--but expensive

This product has kept my 5 and 2 year old in their room until the 'sun comes up" since we got it (2 year old needed re-directed/reminded 2x but did so willingly and has caught on now)
Only thing I would change cheaper price point :) That said I would buy it again, it works!

Great buy!

I bought this clock to hopefully teach our two and a half daughter to stay in bed in the morning until at least 7. This clock is amazing after using it for 2 nights, it became part of our bedtime and naptime routine to say bye bye to the sun and see the star appear and our daughter stays in bed until the sun comes back on the clock. We even get an extra hour an half on the weekend!

well worth the money

My 3 year old recently started waking up and looking out the window and saying "the sun is up so I can wake up now". Which did not fair so well when the sun started coming up at 6 and earlier. He now sleeps until 8 and wakes up to the sun on the clock! He loves the stars and it acts as a night light as well.

Mostly like it

Dislikes:
*You have to set it daily. A great feature would be the option NOT to set it daily, but for it to automatically turn on each day
**Too bright. Even on setting number one, it puts off quite a glow
***Not user friendly in terms of setting the clock
****Expensive

Would be nice if the sun stayed on until bed time and then have the stars come out

Like: It works! My kids wait for the sun to come up before they get out of bed. (Ages 6 and 4) Since this is the whole purpose of the clock, I rated it four stars, since this is the part that really matters

Works great to get your kid to understand WHEN he can get up, quality of clock questionable...

The concept is GREAT and it has worked for us -- after just 5 days our 2 and a half year old now knows that he can't get out of bed until the sun comes up. Now we're getting so much more sleep in the morning, way past the regular 5am to 5:30 wake ups.

BUT we've gone through 2 clocks. the first one lasted two days when Ben knocked it off the table onto the floor and it stopped working, so I'd say it needs to be more durable.

Liked with some reservations

I was fairly happy with the product. My only issue was that it is quite bright. Even on the dimmest setting I found the moon created a glow in my daughter's room that wasn't really conducive to sleeping. If your child is used to a bright night light this wouldn't be an issue. I love the concept!

Travel friendly too!

We bought two of these Groclock's so that we can keep one at home and bring one with us when travelling with our 2 year old daughter. It took approximately a good week for her to get use to it at home and now we bring it with us when we travel. Since she's use to it at home, we figured we can bring one with us while on the road (hotel room, cottage, friends place, grandparents home, etc) and when she wakes up in the middle of the night in a unfamiliar room, the clock brings a piece of security into the room and she goes right back to sleep. Excellent product that truly works!!!

cool product

We set this up about 1 week ago. My boys totally get it but have been a little stubborn about waiting for Mr. Sun, today was the first morning they stayed in their room until 7am. They really like their "special clock" and talk about Mr. Star and Mr. Sun. The book is helpful to give them incentive and explain the concept. I do wish that for nap you could set it for hours you want them to sleep vs time they can get up. Overall a well designed product.

This product is amazing.

We bought this clock for our almost 3 yr old. She was getting up every morning between 5am and 630am to climb in bed with us. Neither one of us can sleep once she comes in our room. This clock instantly changed things. In the couple weeks, it took to arrive, we explained in great detail over and over again what the clock does and what the colors mean. The 1st night, we set it for 615a. She waited until the clock turned yellow to come to our room even though I heard her get up about 30 mins earlier on the monitor. Each morning we have set it 5 mins later and this morning she waited until 645a. It's a great way for a toddler to be able to "tell time". LOVE THIS CLOCK! WORTH EVERY PENNY!

Excellent

Don't hesitate to buy this product. Yes, it took two nights for our almost 3 year old to "get it" but ever since he has stayed quiet in his bed until the sun is up without complaint. I set the wake up time later every three days or so. Our 1 year old is sleeping better now too as there is less comotion in the morning. All around, everyone in the house is in better moods. The plastic and display are great quality and I'm certain the clock will withstand the test of time. I had to use the "lock" feature on the buttons for the first few days because my son wanted to make the sun wink at him. Isn't it adorable now in the morning how they shout out "Mommy! Daddy! The sun is up!" The story book that comes along with the clock is helpful too.

Excellent product – everyone is getting more sleep

We were a bit sceptical of this product especially the price, but after reading a few reviews I thought what do we have to lose. Our almost 3yr old daughter was waking up earlier and earlier each day. We were approaching 4:45am and ready to try anything. One night using this clock was all it took. We read the story, asked her when she should get up, she said "when the sun rises". The next morning at 6:30am all I heard was "how cool is that, the sun just rised". It is a week later and we are at 6:45am wake-up now hoping to up it to 7am next week. I have never reviewed a product till now. We are really impressed it was money well spent!

I was sceptical but it really works

This clock is responsible for my having at least an hour of extra sleep per night. That's huge.

The first two nights were not good - the first night, my two-and-a-half year old woke up every hour and cried for me to come and make the sun come up. The second night, she came into our room early as usual, and when we explained she needed to stay in her room and sleep or play quietly till the sun came up, she screamed and cried, but we were firm on the matter.

Ever since then, she stays in her room until the sun comes up, then runs into our room with a delighted smile to tell us that the sun has come up. I'm completely amazed that it worked, and very, very glad we bought the clock.

Great product

We bought this for our daughter when she was only 20 months old because we were expecting our second baby when she would be 22 months old and we wanted to have a head start on discouraging the early morning wake ups before the baby arrived. She seemed to understand in theory from the very start that the sun coming up meant time to get up but for the first while, she would still call for us and one of us would go in and sleep in her bed with her until the sun came up. We expected that, since she was still quite young and were happy to just teach her the concept of it and let her see us getting up when the sun came up.
Now, 4 months later, she is 24 months old, has a 2 month old sister and she sleeps, like clockwork, until the sun comes up. Usually within a few minutes of that happening, she calls out (with much enthusiasm) "Mommy! Daddy! Sun come up!". I'm already thinking ahead to when the clocks change and how helpful this will be if we change the time of the sun coming up by just a few minutes everyday in the weeks leading up to the time change to help her adjust.

My 2 1/2 yrs old son started waking up very early this past summer on those bright early mornings. I needed to find a way to get him to stay in bed until, at least 6:30 am. We love our Gro Clock!

We bought the Gro Clock for our 2 ½ year old and we’re thrilled with the product. After reading the included storybook to our daughter and showing her the star and sunshine she completely understood that she had to stay in bed until the sun came up. She was previously waking up around 6am and now we’re getting an extra hour of sleep. Even when she wakes up early she plays in her room or chats to herself until she sees the sunshine.

The clock has two settings for nap and nighttime sleep. It’s easy to use, and I love that we can adjust the light on the clock so it’s not too bright in her room at night. Once she gets older we’ll be able to use the digital clock function and alarm; we thought the price was reasonable since she won't outgrow it.
