WTF? What’s the Foonf? by Clek

Clek? Let me guess you have never heard of them? Well, Clek is not your average car seat company. In fact, Clek is a Canadian company out of Toronto, Ontario that has taken a somewhat different approach to car seats. Clek started out of the automotive industry and has focused on providing a top quality product with luxury automotive quality, safety, and comfort! My favourite part however is that they are 100% North American, sourced and made!

Up till now Clek’s main focus has been on the booster seat platform, with their flagship product the Oobr. The Oobr is best known for it’s magnesium steel frame and fixed latch system which make it one of the safest booster seats on the market! Check out the Oobr here

What’s the Foonf? The Foonf is Clek’s “soon to be launched” convertible car seat. You can find the Foonf here.

Like Oobr, when Clek set out to design the Foonf car seat they wanted to design a stylish seat that kids wanted to use, but also design the safest seat on the market! Here are some of my favourite features of the new Clek Foonf.

1. REACT System – Rapid Energy-Absorbing Crumple Technology. Taken from the crumple zone in the automotive industry, Clek has put a mini crumple zone into the car seat. The React system absorbs energy during the collision by crumpling the aluminum honeycomb so that less energy is absorbed by the child.

2. Rigid Latch – Like the Oobr, the Foonf uses the rigid latch system when forward facing. As we know, one of the major reasons kids are not safe in their seats is because they are not installed properly. The rigid latch drastically reduces the errors that can be made when installing and makes the Foonf one of the easiest seats to install.

3. Extended Rear-Facing – The Foonf can rear-face to 45lbs and is one of the first seats in Canada to offer an anti-rebound bar. The anti-rebound bar improves stablility of the seat and stops the child’s head from coming into contact with the vehicle seat during a collision. A big step in the right direction! Keeping our kids rear-facing as long as possible!

Foonf - Rear Facing4. Stylish Funky Design – Clek has always focused on their design but not so they sell more seats, rather to keep kids in seats longer. It’s a proven fact that kids are safer in car seats than just a vehicles seat belt. However, there are great pressures from other kids to “graduate” from a convertible seat, to a booster, to the vehicle seat belt. It’s almost like a right of passage. Clek’s goal has been to make a seat that is cool, something that both kids and parents will want to use and brag about! Sort of like like that new sports car!

The Foonf is scheduled to launch in Canada in June 2012. It’s definitely going to make a splash! If you are interested in more information on the Foonf, please take the time to watch the video below. We will be taking pre-orders for the Foonf once we get closer to the launch date. You can find the Foonf here.

I love so much about this carseat *except* the rigid UAS anchors. We bought a Clek booster seat for our kindergartener for when we travel and won’t need a carseat very much (and/or when flying to visit the grandparents, where we already have carseats, and so need something quick and easy for taxis to/from airports). Well, we went to Australia. We rented a car. And the crease in the rental car’s back seat was in a completely different place than the Clek anticipated. Nevermind the lack of anchors, we couldn’t even safely position it in the car because the rigid anchors jabbed into the seat since they couldn’t reach the crease (it was about 10-15 cm above where it needed to be for the seat to fit). HUGE problem!!

Britax is still a better carseat.

    • Amanda

What model of Britax’s makes it a better car seat?

  • Pmcwatters

I’m very interested. How much is the carseat going to be? We purchased the Clek booster seat & our oldest son loves it but with 2 cars it’s getting pretty expensive. Can you give us an idea of the price? Thanks

Pam, the Foonf starts at $449.99 and goes up from there based on the fabric. You can see pricing here…http://www.snugglebugz.ca/foonf.html

Specialized car seats for children and infants are necessary when you want to take them on the road. They are very sensitive to bumps and crashes.

Can this seat be used from newborn? Also will the US version have the anti rebound bar as well?

no, child must be able to hold head upright. Clek’s site says around 4 months and 15 lbs I think?
