Snuggle Mom 23
I can still very clearly remember the day I realized that the monitor we bought for our son was not our best purchase ever. I had put our new baby down for a nap, turned the monitor on and settled in for a couple minutes of relaxation when I heard strange sounds coming from my sons room. I went upstairs to listen in but I heard nothing, returned downstairs and once again discovered strange noises and voices coming through the monitor. I struggled to figure it out, when it occurred to me that I actually recognized the voices through the monitor…. my neighbours!! We must have both had our monitors on, and I was receiving a voice feed from inside their house. Ugh!!!!!
I immediately turned off my monitor, and then did a quick re-cap of all conversations I may have had in the passed 30 minutes!! Much to my relief I couldn’t remember anything awkward I may have said… but at the same time decided a better monitor is an absolute must!
In walks the Avent monitors created by Phillips. To start with this monitor is created by the people behind electronics. It makes sense! Why not use one of the leaders in the electronic industry to create a baby monitor. This monitor has many features, but of course my favourite is the use of Dect technology. This pretty much guarantees “ZERO” interference. Because, as much as I truly love my neighbours I am sure the last thing they want to hear at night is our supper time conversations.
The no interference is only the first reason why I like this monitor so much. It also shows on the parent unit (Mid model) the temperature in the baby’s room, fabulous for my family, where the nursery is above the garage leaving it the coldest room in the winter. It also has a chat button, where you can speak into your babies room, or activate the lullabies programmed into the monitor all from the parent hand held piece!
But…. my absolute favourite story is taking this monitor to the cottage for the summer. I was able to enjoy afternoons by the dock while having crystal clear sound into the baby’s room, knowing immediately when they woke up from naps. It was on one of these days, in the fun of hanging out on the dock that our monitor fell into the dark lake water 10 feet down. My husband dove into the water, only to see that the light was still flashing on the monitor and quickly brought it back up to us on the dock. We dried it out, and a few years later it still works perfectly!!
There are lots of great monitors on the market, but this one is my top pick!
We thought it would be great to get some customer feedback on this monitor. Here are some comments from parents using these products:

I was very pleased with how quickly our monitor showed up. So far we have only used it in our home, but plan to take it camping this summer. I’m very happy with the battery life and range (I have been out to the clothesline). It is very sensitive, I’ve had the windows open on the warmer days and its picked up the birds outside. The sensitivity is adjustable so I am are able to fix that, but it doesn’t bother me. I really like the light sensors for vacuuming, although I think an additional vibrating sensor would be cool, then I could stick it on my hip and not have to look at the monitor all the time. I would definitely buy this again, and have already recommended this product and your site to friends.

We own the Avent DECT basic monitor. I’ve been using it for 6 months. The quality is excellent. It is completely silent with no white noise coming from the hand set at all. I also own a cheaper ($50) monitor (the summer infant slim and clear digital monitor) and it has a soft steady hum of white noise and the sound quality is not as good as the Avent (which I would hope is the case since the price is so much higher).
The range is also excellent. I can walk to my mailbox at the end of my street and it continues to work. This summer I plan on using it at my cottage where the sleeping cabin is a couple hundred feet away from the main cottage. The talk back feature will be handy in that situation as well.
The only downside of this product is the price, but in my opinion is was worth the cost to get this superior quality product. I would certainly recommend to a friend.

We are still using the Avent monitor. Shortly after purchasing it we had a problem with the wire casing separating from the part that plugs in, exposing raw wires. We contacted SnuggleBugz, who directed us to the company. Avent replaced the monitor quickly and with no hassles. The service was great!
I like that there is no interference with our other baby monitor and that it doesn’t buzz or have any low level sound, like some do. Unfortunately, it is not super sensitive. It’s good if they scream or call for you, but if they are sick (i.e. puking, say) you hardly here a sound. The feature enabling you to talk to them through the monitor is helpful, because it enables me to let my three year old that I’ll be right up, without yelling up the stairs and waking my baby!
Overall, I am happy with it, however, I would probably not purchase it again. I think I would buy the video monitor with two cameras, if I could do it again.

Travelling this spring to visit the hot southern sun for a little vacation? As much fun as it is to finally feel that warm sun again, there’s a lot of preparation to take your little munchkin to visit some of these warmer climates. Top of my list is protection against any of those harmful rays , although we love the sun we also need to be incredibly careful around it.
UV Protected Swimwear
My children spend a lot of time in the sun and I always feel at ease when they are wearing their Baby Banz UV Protected swimwear. My daughters have these adorable two piece swimwear sets (skirt and top) that are UPF 50+…. for absolute maximum protection. The skirt and top are both fully protected and look absolutely adorable on! There are boy options also, with great blue graffiti.. or a little simpler.
As adults we very rarely go into the sun without wearing sunglasses. As important as it is for our own eyes to be protected, our children’s are equally as important. The Baby Banz eye wear for both children and kidz is the answer for incredible eye protection. They are made with lenses that are a category 3 UV 400 lenses….. which means that it eliminates 100% of the UVA and UVB rays!! This is peace of mind for all parents.
I wouldn’t even think about going outside in the sun without Sunscreen, especially in the Southern sun where it is just that much hotter and more intense. I just spent an incredible week in the Caribbean and wore 50 sunscreen every day, while reading outside I could still feel my skin tingle from the sun. Safety is imperative, and there are way too many risks to not take care of our skin. Our little ones skin is even that more sensitive, which is why I recommend the Green Beaver Sun Products. I have been asked for quite a while to add this line to our current products, and I finally did it!!
If a vacation is in your near future.. you may want to check out my Travelling Mamma blog, with a few more tips!
Having a hard time making sense of all the different swaddles available? I know it can be incredibly daunting to go shopping for a swaddling blanket for your baby and end up walking into a huge selection unable to undersand the differences between them all.
In fact, often while creating gift registries for clients we spend quite a bit of time discussing the differences between all the brands. Everyone is always interested in something that will help baby sleep better, and in return mom and dad too! But, how do you make a decision when there are so many options available? There are many different types of swaddles on the market and they each have a unique quality to them that makes them appeal to different people for a variety of reasons. The Halo Sleepsack, the Woombie and the Aden and Anais swaddles are all top of our list for swaddles.
Halo Sleep Sack
The Halo brand is created by an incredible company that puts a lot research into their product. The founder of the company began research into sleeping environments after his family lost a child due to SIDS. Since then the Halo brand has been devoted to creating products that encourage healthier and safer sleep for baby.
This swaddle is great because it is both a sleep sack and a swaddle. The swaddle portion of this is attached to the back using velcro so that if your child doesn’t particularly like to be swaddled you can still use your purchase as a sleep sack. To use the Halo sleepsack you would place baby into the sleepsack, tuck babies arms in and wrap the swaddle around baby fastening again with the velcro. The sleepsack zips from the top to the bottom which makes it incredibly easy for late night diaper changes while baby stays swaddled, warm and comfy on top, you can easily unzip up to the diaper, change, and put baby back to sleep.
The Woombie amazed me the first time I saw it. We often have people say that their baby is continually trying to get their hands out of the swaddle, and then end up scratching their face or waking them self up. The woombie allows the child to still move their arms without actually having to be released from the swaddle. To see how this works watch the video where you can see the infant is able to fully move within the swaddle, comfortably play with their hands, move their legs, without scratching or startling themselves awake.
Aidan and Anais
The Aidan and Anais collection relis on the traditional form of swaddling where you use a fabric that you would then wrap and swaddle around your baby. The unique part of what they have done is in using an incredible Muslin fabric that all of our customers have fallen in love with. The Muslin fabric is a delicate, yet very durable weave. The fabric is stretchy, which is perfect for swaddling baby as it allows the fabric to be wrapped snuggly around baby while still allowing some give for movement. The muslin fabric is also very lightweight and therefore lends itself to be incredibly breathable. And…. my favourite part is that the material only becomes better as it softens with each wash, becoming better with age.
Although there are many brands on the market these are a few that we stand behind, love the company stories about the product and hear repeatedly how well new parents babies are sleeping thanks to their swaddles!!
I can hardly believe that our Snuggle Babies are turning into “Snuggle Kidz”!
We have successfully completed our first couple weeks into a new school year, which has been a particularly exciting time as our oldest son has started Grade 1! For an “active” little boy, all day every day in a classroom is a huge accomplishment! Starting French Immersion, and coming home with phrases like “Sure le tapis” and “If fait beau”, make this mamma so proud!
Snuggle Kid #2 has started JK! She is so excited to finally be a “big girl” and go to school all day, as she says, “All by myself”! She has started to love playing with her new friends, and asks every morning if this day she gets to go to school.
Although it is sad to watch them grow up so fast, it is amazing to watch my babies turn into little people, maturing and becoming independent.
It’s back to school time and I am all excited for my munchkins. Little A.J is starting kindergarten this year, and big brother is starting Grade 1, all day every day! I loved school as a kid especially getting ready and all the excitement around new school supplies. This year though, we are adding some new items to the “must have” list for school supplies.
All of the schools are slowly turning to litterless lunch programs. I love that we are teaching our children to be conscious of the environment and continuing to emphasize re-using and re-cycling that the home environment is already applying. But…. it has been difficult in the past to find easy ways to send a “litterless lunch”. So many items are pre-packaged, and those that aren’t I am very accustomed to using ziploc bags! Although ziploc bags can be reused a couple times, they def. won’t hold up for an entire year!
So, two of my most recent favourite finds are making back to school lunches a whole lot easier!
This Byn has 5 compartments that will fit many different options for lunches! Top of our list are items like strawberries, yogurt, cheese and crackers, sandwiches… pretty much anything your little one wants will fit. There is also a space for a drink container, but you could also maximize space and use that for food storage also. The best part is that it comes with hundreds of dishwasher safe stickers, so that your child can design it to match his/her personal style.
2. Snack Bags
If you choose to go with a different lunch container, you can’t go wrong with these Snack Bags. I put anything from fruit and cheese to sandwiches in them. Each child has a couple and it makes lunches so simple and “Litterless”! The best part about them is that they are machine washable, so when hand washing just won’t do it, I throw it in the next load and they are ready to go!
Have you used either of these? Would you like to win a Snack Bag? Comment below and let us know some of your favourite snacks to pack in lunches. We will choose a couple lucky winners to each receive a new Snack Bag… contest closes Monday September 12, 2011, at 11:59pm EST, and winners will be announced the following day.
– winner must be a resident of Canada
– only comments with answers will be considered eligible enteries
– once the winner has been drawn I will make every effort to contact them. If I can not contact them with in 2 weeks of the contest a new winner will be drawn
