Hey there mamma-to-be!
Isn’t it fun to be a part of this new club? As I mentioned in my first post, we’re going to be talking about the ups, downs and the craziness of pregnancy. My downs so far have been nausea, heartburn, indigestion… it really sounds like a pink medicine ad doesn’t it? But the ups really outweigh all of those symptoms. I mean, this is such a wonderful time in our lives, right?
What I’m loving about being pregnant.
When I first found out I was pregnant I couldn’t WAIT to tell our friends and family. I found the wait to be the hardest part. Now, not everyone waits and it’s all based on personal preference but my husband and I lost our first baby last December and we just really wanted to be 100% sure before we decided to share our incredible news. I love all of the guilt free naps, having people jump to open doors for me or to carry boxes to my car. Trust me, I’m taking full advantage of this pregnancy business. It’s kind of like having a super power just because you have a little human in your belly or feeling like your Beyonce for 9 months. Yes, that’s it… you’re Beyonce girl! Enjoy it now because once that baby arrives they will definitely take centre stage.
What’s not to love?
Well… I already listed a few of the not so pleasant symptoms and now I can add to that list. Recently, I’ve been waking up at about 3am with this burst of adrenaline. It’s 100% my pregnancy. Anyone else going through this? I toss and turn for about an hour or two and then, if i’m lucky, I can all back asleep. It’s like the baby is trying to prep me for my lack of sleep in my oh so near future. Right now I can still sleep on my stomach and I’m so thankful for that. I like to roll around a lot in my sleep. Some days I wake up and I’m sprawled out like a starfish in our bed. No wonder our dog stopped sleeping with us. I’m not really looking forward to not being able to sleep on my stomach OR my back. I don’t exactly know when that starts but I’m dreading it. I haven’t invested in a body pillow or wedge yet but I’ve been told I’m going to need one.
I’ve also been waking up STARVING in the middle of the night. This baby is definitely growing and needs a lot more food than it did at the beginning of my pregnancy. I’ve started sleeping with snacks next to the bed so that I don’t have to go down the stairs when I’m half awake. That doesn’t seem like a good combination. My go to midnight snack: BetterBump Bars. This way I don’t feel guilty because I know I need the nutrition and they’re great for the baby too. They were developed by a dietitian and a food scientist to help with maternal and lactation health. I have tried all three flavours and I’d say the cranberry hazelnut with dark chocolate is my favourite. Another symptom that is oh so common and not so comfortable during pregnancy is swollen feet. I swear it’s the extra 20 pounds that I’ve gained already. My doctor swears that it’s normal to gain that much but it does worry me a little bit. I’m noticing the water retention in my hands and my feet and I have a feeling it’s only going to get worse the bigger this belly gets.
I had no idea that it’s suggested to start applying stretch mark cream just 1 month into your pregnancy! It wasn’t until month 3 that my friends were sharing their smooth belly secret and I was very late to the party. Get your cream as early as you can and apply it EVERYWHERE! I’m talking about your arms, your thighs, your hips, your belly and yes ladies, even your boobs. At this point, I’ve tried a few stretch mark creams and they’re all very different. Some smell like coconut, some have other scents, some are really thick, some are oils, butters and, of course, lotions. If it’s going to help me from getting those little marks all over my body then lather me up! I have to admit my favourite cream to put on during the day is by Mustela. It doesn’t have a scent which is great if you’re smothering yourself in lotion before you head out the door. It’s also extremely soothing because it’s not to thick and the best part… ALL NATURAL ingredients. Think about it, you’re smothering that cream that will be absorbed into your body right on top of where your baby gets all of it’s nutrients. Mustela has avacado peptides to help with sensations of tightness, galactoarabinan (I had to look this one up) which is extracted from a larch tree to promote elasticity and beeswax with shea butter to really hydrate and moisturize your skin. The end result will leave your belly (and body) feeling supple and soft. Would love to know if you decide to try it. Please leave me a comment below if you do.
This past weekend, baby and I crossed another milestone. I’ve got my linea nigra. I seriously thought I was going to get off scott-free and not get one but I was wrong. I’ve heard that if it’s all the way up to your bra line that you’re having a boy and if it’s below the belly button you’re having a girl. I have no clue what I’m having but mine’s below my belly button. Speaking of, that’s something else that is drastically changing. I didn’t even notice until the other weekend when a friend said WOW, you’re belly button is definitely going to pop. I thought… yikes! Every day it gets closer and closer to the edge and I’m just waiting for my bump to have another bump. Does it hurt when it pops out? I’ve heard it doesn’t always look the same after you have the baby and that worries me a bit. How far along are you supposed to be you when your belly button pops? Ok, I just googled that to save us all and of course I’m getting answers that vary from 24 weeks to 30 weeks and theirs still haven’t popped. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see what happens.
Of course everyone wants to start shopping for the baby but what about the mamma to be? What things can help us out when we’re pregnant? I had no idea. I have to share an item that I tried out recently though that gave me INSTANT relief. It’s called the Upsie Belly by Belly Bandit and it’s fantastic! Once you get it on you feel instant support for your lower back but that’s not all it does. After doing a little research I am beyond impressed by what this belt can do:
- eases sciatic, back & leg pain
- helps to increase blood flow
- decreases varicose veins, hernias and hemorrhoids
- adds back, hip and abdominal support
Sign me up! Oh, and another super ‘cool’ thing (just wait for it…) not only does the Upsie Belly help you during your pregnancy but it can also give you comfort after the baby is born for your healing belly. There are hot/cold packs that you can insert to give yourself some extra relief. Genius! I actually didn’t realize that I needed the back support until I put it on. You don’t know what you’re missing until you try it for yourself. (or win one! Enter below!)
Ok mammas, I’ll be back next week with some more helpful pregnancy info and a little more about my own pregnancy journey. Please let me know what kind of things you’d like me to talk about. Any burning pregnancy questions or concerns? Products you’d like me to test out? I’d love to hear from you!

While most little ones don’t sprout their first tooth until around six months, oral hygiene is important even before we see any pearly whites, and long after. Like any healthy practice, it can be hard to develop at first, but it’s always best to start young to form the habit of oral hygiene. After years of taking care of their teeth, my kids don’t question teeth brushing or flossing – though it can still be a pain for us parents if I’m honest!
With each stage of development there are different practices for keeping your child’s mouth and teeth clean, starting with their gums in the early months. Keep their toothless grin clean by wiping the gums twice a day – ideally once in the morning, and after their last feed at night. When milk or formula rest on the gums, and eventually the teeth, over night, teeth may decay. Check out the Natural Gum & Tooth Wipes from Jack n Jill, or their Silicone Gum Brush. A baby wash cloth like the MAM Oral Care Rabbit will also do the trick. The goal is to clear away any bacteria, but it will have the added benefit of soothing any teething pain.
Sucking and Pacifying
Habitual and long-term sucking can cause problems for your child’s teeth, especially if the habit continues after baby teeth start to fall out. If your baby uses a soother or drinks from a bottle, it’s a good idea to cut both by age two. Sippy cups with straws, like the ones from Munchkin, keep liquids away from your child’s teeth, and babies can easily begin taking water from them around age one. Avoid letting your child fall asleep with a bottle in her mouth or nursing to sleep regularly – these soothing practices allow sugar from the milk to decay their teeth and cause cavities. If your baby needs something to suck on to fall asleep, try a bottle with water instead of milk, or a pacifier.
It’s the sweetest thing seeing those first couple of teeth pop through the surface. Suddenly their smile is totally different and time seems to be going by too quickly (like with all major milestones!). As soon as your baby has even one tooth, it’s time for tooth brushing. Start without toothpaste and a small, soft bristled brush, such as the Jack N’ Jill Buzzy Brush or the MAM First Brush. While parents should always brush their baby’s teeth (many dentists encourage this until primary school!), consider getting a child-friendly brush to let your little guy try it out for himself. Having a toy toothbrush is also very helpful in normalizing teeth brushing if your baby is resistant to it. We love the Angel Brush tooth brush or the Banana brush and your baby will too! Make sure toothbrushes, even the toy ones, are always kept in a safe, clean place.
Babies under age two do not need toothpaste. Simple brushing and regular cleaning will be enough for their sprouting teeth. The Canadian Dental Association reminds us that unless a child is at high risk of tooth decay (which is to be determined by a dentist), they do not need fluoride tooth paste until over age three, so make sure you’re using fluoride-free tooth paste, like Jack N’ Jill’s Natural Organic Toothpaste for your little ones. I also love the safe to swallow Happy Mouth Anti-Cavity Rinse for babies as young as nine months.
Above all, it’s important to visit your dentist regularly and model good oral hygiene for your children. In my case, my kids are now old enough to remind me to floss, and they do regularly! Starting those habits young is so crucial. Save sugary snacks and drinks for special occasions and only offer water before bed; not milk. Before long, you’ll be enduring your children wiggling their loose teeth and hiding teeth for the tooth fairy, all in the blink of an eye.
