Baby Food – Getting started on solids

Myles is about to embark on the solids journey – I really have to pinch myself that my little newborn isn’t a newborn but a 6 month, chubby baby! His diet of breast milk and the occasional formula bottle is about to change & a whole new world of rice cereal, prunes & squash is about to begin!

I am not sure if I am alone in this but something about putting solids into their ‘pure little bodies’ makes me a little nervous. With Kellan I made a lot of his baby food – it felt good to know exactly what I was feeding him and that it was nice and fresh! I plan to do the same for Myles but it is sooo true what they say about your 2nd- you are way more relaxed busy! I can only imagine what my 5th will be eating when h/she is 6 months old! ;)

nothing more rewarding than a freezer full of home-made baby food!

A couple key components of baby food making is a good food processor & baby cubes (a serious must-have). Since I lost some parts of my “magic bullet” during our move I am in the market for a new one. I am debating between the following:

  1. The Babycook Food maker by Beaba. The reviews on the Snuggle Bugz website look good for this guy. I love how it’s a steamer, blender, defroster & warmer in one! What more can a Momma want?!
  2. The Ultimate Baby Food Centre by Kids Line. What I like about this guy is that he can do multiple batches at the same time….ummm…saving Momma time is worth every penny!
  3. The Electric Food Mill by KidCo. What I like about this lil’ fella is that he’s inexpensive and may do the trick just fine.

Have you tried any of these processors? Or do you have any suggestions?? I am excited to get cookin’ and will give you my feedback on the one I choose! :)

Okay, I know I am picking your brains but Mom to Mom advice is the best advice out there so here are a couple more questions…

- Do you have any good baby food recipes?

-  What was your little ones first solid food experience? Did you go the prune route to get things flowing? ;) Or was a rice cereal babes first meal?

-  When did you start solids?? 6 month mark? Earlier? Later?

Love to hear from you!

About Lydia

My name is Lydia and I am a momma (still can’t believe that)! My husband and I recently upgraded to be a family of four. We have two precious boys- Kellan (a chatty 2.5 year old) and Myles (a feisty 8 month old)- life sure is busy but we wouldn't change it for the world! I have been working in the baby industry for the past 5 years so when asked if I would be interested in doing some product blogging while on mat leave I couldn’t resist! I am hoping to help all the mommas (& dads) out there who want honest, reliable information in the crazy world of baby products- enjoy! check out my blog at http://itsmommyapproved.blogspot.ca/

I used the kid co baby food mill and it did the job perfectly! For our second we did a few purees but a lot more soft foods that could be gummed (ie steamed carrots, broccoli, potatoes, fish). It got him experimenting with textures and it went really well! Good luck!

I used my regular food processor and made bigger batches, then froze them. Worked great. Don’t think it’s necessary to buy one of the baby processors if you have a regular one.

Like Jennifer , the kidco Baby food mill was a very easy way for us to grind up things — right at the table! I agree with Tania that for everything else we used a regular food processor (and regular ice cube trays). I’m getting ready to do what Jennifer did for solids with kiddo number 2 –few purees and lots of soft table food.

Thanks for sharing Heather & I appreciate the advice! :) I think I will go with the Kidco baby food mill

I went the baby-led weaning route which included letting them eat off my plate whatever they could hold in their hands and was soft or gnawable….steamed broccoli spears, gnawing on pork and beef bones, whatever was of interest. Kept his iron and other vitamins up just fine….he’s now 42lbs and 3.4 feet high!

Their gag reflex is really efficient and while initially a tad alarming, no choking occurred…just the retching from the super-sensitive gag reflex. That’s what it’s supposed to do! He hated anything mushy anyhow, so this is what we did.

Never fed my little guy by spoon until recently (he’s 3.5) because he’s regressing from having just been weaned from all nursing.

I introduced solids to my little one when he was 6 months old. I gave him the usual rice cereal and I didn’t buy a specific food maker for that and I think you should start with it too because it’s been recommended by many professional doctors.
